Vocational Education and Training

Zanzibar: Training in Water and Wastewater Technology

New Vocational Education and Training Partnership between Ausbildungsverbund Teltow e.V. (AVT) and Karume Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) as well as Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (ZATI) launched in December 2024 on Zanzibar.

The new Vocational Education and Training Partnership in Zanzibar between AVT, KIST and ZATI aims to strengthen public training institutions so that trainees can be equipped with skills in the field of water and wastewater engineering that are relevant to the labor market and required by the private sector. In the long term, this should contribute to the creation of a sustainable vocational training sector and promote employment opportunities on the island.

The development and accreditation of new curricula for the training of water technicians at Level 4 and 5 (technician level) that meet national standards is the core of the project, which is being implemented as part of the Partners in Transformation programme of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. These curricula are being developed in close collaboration with partners from the public and private sectors to ensure they reflect the actual needs of the labor market. A particular focus on the integration of modules to promote gender equality and support women in technical professions.

Another important aspect is the qualification of trainers. The goal is to train a group of highly qualified trainers as multipliers by the end of the project, who can pass on their expertise to future trainers. Particular attention will be paid to the targeted involvement of women as trainers in order to make technical vocational training more attractive to women.

Furthermore, an important component of the project is to raise awareness of the resource-efficient use of water and wastewater, particularly in the tourism sector. Through information campaigns and training courses, relevant skills for a new profession in water and wastewater engineering will be identified. The tourism sector will be actively involved in this process to ensure that the skills developed meet practical requirements. This and further information, including facts about the previous partnership with the AVT in Zanzibar focussing on training of trainers and activities particularly in the automotive and catering sectors, can also be found on the AVT website www.avt-bildung.de/bbp-sansibar .
