Rwanda: IT jobs for disadvantaged young people

In December 2024, a new PartnerAfrica project was launched in which the Bundesverband IT-Mittelstand (BITMi) e.V. and the ICT Chamber want to open up low-threshold career prospects in the ICT sector for disadvantaged groups in Rwanda - including people with disabilities, from socially disadvantaged families, with little schooling or refugees.

In Rwanda, the ICT sector is seen as a key area for the transformation from an agrarian economy to a knowledge-based economy. The government is thus addressing both the increasing national and international demand for IT specialists and Rwanda's positioning as an attractive outsourcing location.

Building on the success and network of the previous BITMi and ICT Chamber project, the new programme will further develop qualifications in the ICT sector in a targeted manner. The aim is to create long-term and good employment opportunities for vulnerable groups by initially qualifying them for simple ICT activities and gradually introducing them to more advanced tasks in the sector.

The project develops training concepts for basic digital skills (digital literacy) as well as ICT specialisations such as website development, digital craftsmanship, software testing and e-commerce. In addition to organising the ICT training courses, graduates are integrated into the labour market through individual placement support. A particular focus is on the promotion of women. Planned networking and B2B events in Germany and Rwanda are intended to sensitise the public to the potential of the target group. The project is financed under the Invest for Jobs brand by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation. and Development.
